Impacts of IT Management Based on Indicators (KPIs) on Strategic Decision Making: Methodologies for Generating Monthly Reports and Root Cause Analysis Applied to Continuous Improvement

Information Technology (IT) management based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) has emerged as a fundamental approach to support strategic decision-making in modern organizations. This article investigates the impacts of KPI-based IT management on strategic decision-making, with a specific focus on methodologies for generating monthly reports and root cause analysis applied to continuous improvement. Through a systematic review of international literature, we identified significant gaps in the integration between KPI systems, managerial reporting processes, and root cause analysis methodologies in IT environments. The research proposes the KPIM-DSS (KPI Management for Decision Support Systems) framework, which integrates four main components: KPI collection and processing, structured monthly report generation, systematic root cause analysis, and continuous improvement based on the adapted pCAPD method. The framework is based on established concepts in the literature, including quantitative relationships between KPIs , the application of the Balanced Scorecard to IT governance , the synthesis of business data through strategic dashboards , and structured ITIL reporting methodologies. The results demonstrate that the systematic integration of these components can provide significant improvements in the quality of strategic decision-making in IT, including uncertainty reduction, increased objectivity in decisions, and improved strategic alignment between IT and business. The proposed framework offers an operational structure that can be adapted to different organizational contexts, considering variations in size, industry, and technological maturity. Practical implications include specific guidelines for implementing integrated KPI and monthly reporting systems, structured methodologies for root cause analysis in IT environments, and continuous improvement processes that support the evolution of organizational capabilities. Theoretical contributions include advancing the understanding of quantitative relationships between KPIs in IT, integrating governance frameworks with continuous improvement processes, and developing conceptual models for data-driven strategic decision-making.
