Agricultural Extension Information Sources, Production and Marketing Challenges for Date Farmers in Egypt, and Export Determinants: An Integrated Analytical Approach using the Gravity Model

This study examines the development of Egypt’s date sector from 2000 to 2023, focusing on production trends, foreign trade performance, farmer information sources, and key production and marketing challenges, It also estimates a gravity model to assess the impact of selected variables on Egyptian date exports. An integrated methodology was adopted: (1) a quantitative analysis using official data and statistical tools such as arithmetic means, trend equations, instability coefficients, and the gravity model; and (2) a descriptive approach based on field surveys from 220 farmers in Ismailia Governorate, evaluating 11 information sources and 14 challenges,Findings show that the harvested area grew from 69,01 in 2000 to 177,18 thousand feddans in 2022, and production rose from 1,01 to 1,87 million tons, However, productivity declined by 0,98% annually.Export value increased from USD 0,6 million in 2001 to USD 88,15 million in 2023, with relatively stable prices (instability coefficient: 20,51%).Farmers primarily relied on neighbors and research stations for information, Major challenges included a shortage of extension agents, lack of skilled labor, and high transportation costs, The gravity model revealed that geographical distance and exchange rate negatively affected exports, while population size, trade agreements, and shared language had positive effects. The study recommends a national strategy to enhance date production through improved extension services, farmer training, and affordable inputs, alongside an export plan targeting populous markets, leveraging trade agreements, and improving logistics.
