Mathematical Disharmony: A Foundational Critique of the Negafibonacci Definition and an Alternative Formulation as the Golden Ratio Duality
This paper introduces Negafibonacci Disharmony as a rigorous alternative to the conventional definition, establishing the dual constant $\psi = -\varphi$ as the ontological counterpart of the golden ratio. Beyond mathematics, this framework redefines aesthetic foundations by granting disharmony equal legitimacy to harmony, bridging algebraic rigor with semantic coherence. The result is not merely a numerical reformulation but a paradigm shift with implications for music theory, visual arts, and philosophy—challenging the hegemony of harmony and inaugurating a pluralistic mathematics of duality. The conventional Negafibonacci definition F−n = (−1)n+1Fn produces the se- quence ...,−8,5,−3,2,−1,1,0,1,1,2,3,5,8,... which, while algebraically consistent, exhibits semantic inconsistency: the prefix ”nega-” suggests persistent negativity, yet positive terms appear for n < 0. We propose an alternative formulation with initial conditions F0 = 0, F−1 = −1, yielding the sequence ...,55,−34,21,−13,8,−5,3,−2,1,−1,0√ This sequence converges to the disharmony constant δ = −1− 5 ≈ −1.618, es- 2 tablishing the duality δ = −φ where φ is the golden ratio. We derive corrected Binet formulas for both Fibonacci and Lucas disharmony sequences, proving the fundamental relationships FnD = −Fn and LDn = Ln. We prove the preservation of classical identities, establish rigorous convergence analysis with error bounds, and demonstrate structural consistency across related recursive sequences.
