Intestinal Toxicity Induced by Graphite Oxide Nanosheets

Graphite oxide (GO) nanosheets widely explored for biomedical and industrial uses, which have shown toxic effects on biological tissues. This study aimed to assess the toxicity of GO sheets on hematological and gastrointestinal tissues in Sprague Dawley rats. Twenty-five post-weaning rats (100±5g) were divided into five groups and treated intraperitoneally with GO sheets at 5.5, 6.5, and 7.5 mg/kg BW. After 28 days hematological parameter, liver enzyme activity (ALT, AST, ALP) and histological changes were evaluated. Results showed a significant increase (p<0.05) in ALT, AST, and ALP levels at the highest dose (7.5 mg/kg BW) along with dose-dependent toxicity in hematological and gastrointestinal tissues. This study concluded that the potential hemato and intestinal toxicity of GO nanosheets at higher exposure levels, emphasizing the necessary of additional toxicity testing and caution biomedical use.
