Coherence and Drift_ A Substrate Law of Human Biology, Institutions, and Collapse
CODES Framework Abstract This paper formalizes a substrate law of coherence and drift. All systems, from cells to civilizations, survive only when their internal processes align with external cycles (PAS_s ≥ θ_c). Drift (PAS_s < θ_c) produces collapse, which functions not as anomaly but as lawful reintegration into larger fields. Humans complicate this law through bounded empathy: care is locally coherent but globally fractured, generating “well-meaning drift.” Cancer, stress, extinction, institutional collapse, and cultural blindness are all reinterpreted as manifestations of misalignment. Noise is reframed as unmeasured phase, not true randomness. Tolstoy is introduced as a narrative precursor of coherence law, illustrating how cultural blindness and detachment converge in human form. Case studies from biology, history, and institutions ground the argument. The conclusion reframes collapse as inevitable reintegration and positions CODES as substrate law for lawful institutional design.
