Anesthetic management of a patient with a retrosternal goiter: A case report
Retrosternal goiter is defined as the extension of thyroid tissue below the thoracic inlet into the mediastinum. It presents unique anesthetic challenges due to its anatomical location and compressive effects. Here, we present a case of 73-year-old female patient with a long-standing multinodular retrosternal goiter with significant intrathoracic tracheal compression and deviation and was scheduled for total thyroidectomy under general anesthesia. The airway was successfully managed by awake video laryngoscopy and intubation. This report highlights the comprehensive anesthetic evaluation and planning involved in managing a patient with a large retrosternal goiter, with particular focus on airway assessment and strategies for securing the airway.
