EvoRoads Project Deliverable 1.2: "Requirements, conceptual architecture and augmented safety criteria catalogue"
This deliverable, produced under the EvoRoads project (Grant Agreement ID: 101147850, Horizon Europe), integrates the outcomes of Task 1.1 (Best Practices and Safe System Assessment Framework), Task 1.2 (Living Labs and Co-Creation), and Task 1.5 (EvoRoads Integrated Platform Conceptualisation). It establishes the foundations for the EvoRoads platform by consolidating requirements, defining the conceptual architecture, and presenting the first version of an augmented safety criteria catalogue. Key contributions include: Stakeholder Co-Creation ActivitiesReports from Living Labs in Turin, Alba Iulia, Spain (Madrid, Galicia, Santa Oliva), and Riga document structured workshops, interactive sessions, and iterative validation. These engagements informed local requirements, shaped pilot-specific technical proposals, and enabled consensus-building across diverse actors. Conceptual ArchitectureThe EvoRoads conceptual architecture is presented as a multi-layered system design that integrates data acquisition, processing, analysis, and application into a unified framework. At the foundation, a sensor and acquisition layer gathers data from vehicles, roadside units, and environmental monitoring devices. This information is processed at the edge layer, where filtering and preliminary analysis ensure responsiveness and reduce data transmission needs. The results are then fed into an integration and harmonisation layer, which consolidates heterogeneous inputs into standardised formats for interoperability. On top of this sits the digital twin and simulation layer, providing a dynamic representation of the road network that is continuously updated with real-time data. Analytical processing occurs in the decision-support layer, where AI-based models deliver risk assessments, maintenance forecasts, and safety insights. Data sharing and governance are handled by the data space and interoperability layer, ensuring secure and transparent exchange across pilots and stakeholders. Finally, an interface and application layer connects the platform with end-users, including road authorities, operators, and citizens. The architecture as a whole emphasises real-time responsiveness, human-in-the-loop intelligence, and federated interoperability across diverse deployment contexts. Augmented Safety Criteria CatalogueBuilding on baseline frameworks, new safety metrics were identified through stakeholder input and pilot activities. The catalogue integrates infrastructure, traffic management, roadside devices, user behaviour, vulnerable road users (VRUs), vehicles, C-ITS, and CCAM. Validation activities ensure alignment with both local contexts and EU-level safety objectives. Implementation RoadmapA phased plan with milestones, deliverables, and risk mitigation strategies charts the pathway toward full integration and demonstration within EvoRoads. The deliverable concludes that EvoRoads now has a co-created, conceptually validated architecture and a dynamic safety criteria catalogue ready to support the development of interoperable, AI-driven safety services across Europe.
