Consciousness as Resonant Coupling in the Zero Field
This paper reinterprets consciousness within the framework of R-theory. While classical physics treats the observer as irrelevant and quantum mechanics reduces observation to a mysterious wavefunction collapse, R-theory proposes that observation is a resonant coupling within the zero field. Consciousness is not external to matter but emerges from the same coherent background that structures particles, forces, and space-time. In this view, observation actively perturbs local coherence, producing resonance nodes that manifest as events. Neural oscillations, biological rhythms, and brain-wide coherence are described as resonance processes, continuous with physical phenomena such as interference and phase-locking. Consciousness thus becomes both a physical and biological resonance pattern. The framework leads to testable predictions: observation should leave measurable perturbations in quantum interference, synchronized neural states may influence resonance outcomes, and consciousness may couple with external fields. By positioning consciousness as resonant coupling, R-theory unites mind and matter under a single principle of coherence in the zero field.
