Ecofeminism regards nature and woman as equal. Just like nature, a woman’s life too is subjected to oppression and exploitation; at the same time, both the earth and woman are seen as symbols of spirituality, motherhood, and vitality. The core principles of ecofeminist theory include: a spiritual perspective, the interconnection between nature and woman, the revival of matrilineal society, and resistance against modern developments.PoetSakthiJothi compares a woman’s resilience to the waves of the sea, affirming that however much suffering a woman may endure, she must remain mentally strong. From the very origin of humankind, the authority to lead the clan was held only by the mother. In the matrilineal society, women carried out all essential tasks—farming, sharing resources, weaving clothes, and building shelters.Nature and woman are not separate; they are one. The subjugation of both is the cause of every form of destruction. The poet equates the sufferings of the land with the toils of women. In agriculture, the use of chemical pesticides disrupts the natural cycle. With the destruction of insects, the birds that depend on them—particularly sparrows—lose their livelihood. This shows that human-created technological development destroys ecological balance.TamilachiThangapandian also asserts that ecofeminism entirely rejects technological determinism. The exploitation of land, water, and mineral resources and the destruction of nature are being systematized and institutionalized through new projects promoted by banks and corporate capitalists.
