Tardigrade–Ant Hybrid Swarm: A Bio-Inspired Framework for Resilient Nanotechnology and Synthetic Biology

This working paper presents the Tardigrade–Ant Hybrid Swarm, a speculative yet structured research pathway that unites the collective intelligence of ants with the extreme resilience of tardigrades. The framework explores how distributed, nearly indestructible micro-collectives could transform medicine, materials science, and exploration in extreme environments. Seven critical hurdles—powering, controlling, coordinating, and safely manufacturing these swarms—are identified alongside proposed solution directions. The paper argues that physical durability (“the armor”) will be solved earlier than distributed intelligence (“the logic”), shaping the developmental arc of the field. A phased feasibility timeline (5–50+ years) situates this vision within realistic scientific progress while inviting interdisciplinary dialogue.
