Comparative Analysis of Sales Methods, Duration, and Price; Second-Hand Goods, Vehicles, and Real Estate vs. New Products
The proliferation of digital platforms has significantly transformed market dynamics, particularly for second-hand goods, which now encompass everything from consumer electronics to real estate, blurring the lines between traditional and online sales channels (Chen et al., 2013). This evolution has led to a re-examination of established sales paradigms, where factors such as sales duration, pricing strategies, and preferred sales methodologies diverge considerably between new and pre-owned items across various product categories (Overby & Jap, 2008). This study endeavors to conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of second-hand goods, vehicles, and real estate sales against their new product counterparts, focusing on nuanced differences in sales methods, duration, and pricing structures. Specifically, it investigates how the intangible aspects of product utility, depreciation, and consumer perception of value influence these market mechanisms in both nascent online platforms and traditional marketplaces (Yoshimoto & Nakabayashi, 2019) (Hristova, 2019). The research particularly addresses the complexities introduced by information asymmetry in online second-hand markets, where the inability to physically inspect goods exacerbates buyer uncertainty and mistrust (Engelmann et al., 2022). This phenomenon notably increases search frictions for consumers, which can influence pricing strategies and the efficacy of word-of-mouth marketing (Wan & Sam, 2024). Furthermore, the study will delve into how digital platforms, through their provision of detailed online information, can mitigate these challenges by influencing transaction prices, especially for experience attributes of products like real estate (Jiang et al., 2023). This comparative analysis will explore how the varying levels of product uniqueness and perceived quality, alongside seller reputation, influence pricing strategies and consumer trust within these diverse market segments, particularly considering the role of blockchain technology in enhancing transparency for secondhand products (Shen et al., 2020). This investigation will also consider the impact of two-sided transaction costs within online platforms, particularly how buyer-side search and seller-side resale costs influence the overall welfare losses for users engaged in high-turnover resalable goods transactions (Yoshimoto & Nakabayashi, 2019).
