So That We May Rejoice: The Structural Role of ἵνα Purpose Clauses in Philippians
Structural analysis of Pauline letters often relies on multiple criteria to mark pericope boundaries, yet one feature in Philippians has been largely overlooked: Paul's strategic placement of purpose clauses introduced by ἵνα. These clauses regularly occur at the close of pericopes, articulating the intended outcome of Paul's exhortations. Applying principles of discourse analysis, this study classifies each ἵνα-clause by function and prominence, demonstrating that the most significant clauses shape the macrostructure of the letter. Their patterned distribution, including across the debated "seam" in 3:1, supports the literary unity of Philippians. Furthermore, their content consistently emphasizes two interconnected themes—present joy in Christ and future glory with Christ—revealing the theological coherence of the letter.
