Stress-Testing the iShares Russell Top 200 Growth ETF (IWY)

This study analyzes the structural risks and performance profile of the iShares Russell Top 200 Growth ETF (IWY), focusing on portfolio concentration, valuation sensitivity, and stress testing. IWY is dominated by mega-cap technology firms—NVIDIA, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, and Meta—with the top ten holdings exceeding 60% of assets, creating a “diversification illusion.” While such concentration has supported strong returns during the AI and cloud expansion, it heightens vulnerability to monetary tightening, policy shocks, and sector-specific corrections. Using portfolio concentration metrics, correlation analysis, multi-factor regressions, and scenario simulations, the study shows IWY delivers asymmetric outcomes: significant upside in technology-led expansions but deeper drawdowns in recessionary or policy-tightening regimes. Correlation with QQQ (~0.95) and high intra-top-10 co-movement (>0.75) confirm limited diversification benefits. The findings suggest IWY should be viewed as a tactical, satellite allocation offering targeted AI exposure rather than a core growth holding, requiring active hedging and policy-aware risk management.
