An Optimum Design Framework for Resolving Incompatible Specifications

In real-world engineering design problems, it is common to encounter conflicting or incompatible specifications that challenge the development of an optimal and feasible solution. These contradictions may arise due to customer demands, performance constraints, cost limitations, or environmental considerations. This paper presents a systematic framework to address such incompatibilities using a multi-objective optimization approach coupled with design trade-off analysis. To find the underlying issues and produce creative design solutions, the methodology combines methods like Quality Function Deployment (QFD), the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ), and Pareto front optimization. A case study in automotive component design is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The results show that by intelligently prioritizing specifications and reformulating design objectives, it is possible to achieve near-optimal performance without compromising critical requirements. This study contributes to advancing the field of design engineering by offering a practical roadmap for managing specification incompatibilities
