Sustainable and Green Pharmacy: Eco-Friendly Approaches in Drug Manufacturing

The pharmaceutical industry, while indispensable for global health, is a significant contributor to environmental degradation through high energy consumption, extensive use of toxic solvents, and generation of chemical waste. Conventional manufacturing techniques prioritize drug efficacy and patient safety but often neglect ecological sustainability. As the world grapples with climate change, resource depletion, and stricter environmental regulations, the concept of green pharmacy has emerged as a transformative approach to ensure environmental responsibility in drug development and production. Green pharmacy integrates green chemistry principles, renewable resources, eco-friendly technologies, and sustainable engineering into pharmaceutical research, production, and distribution. By adopting environmentally responsible practices, the pharmaceutical sector can reduce its ecological footprint while maintaining high-quality therapeutic standards. This review comprehensively examines eco-friendly approaches in drug manufacturing, focusing on solvent-free synthesis, biocatalysis, renewable raw materials, continuous manufacturing, waste minimization, and sustainable packaging. Case studies from global pharmaceutical giants such as Pfizer, Merck, Novartis, and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) illustrate successful implementation of green technologies, including solvent reduction in sildenafil production, enzymatic catalysis for sitagliptin, and continuous manufacturing models. Additionally, regulatory frameworks by the FDA, EMA, WHO, and Indian authorities are highlighted as key drivers promoting sustainable practices in drug production. The paper also discusses the advantages and limitations of green pharmacy, emphasizing the need for investment, skilled workforce development, and supportive policy frameworks. Future perspectives include the integration of artificial intelligence, digital twins, and green nanotechnology to optimize eco-friendly manufacturing processes. In conclusion, sustainable and green pharmacy is not a luxury but a necessity to ensure a balance between human health, economic growth, and environmental stewardship. Transitioning toward greener practices will enable the pharmaceutical industry to achieve sustainability, resilience, and global responsibility.
