Between the Lines and the Lens: A Study of Indian Literary Adaptations on Screen
The Lines and the Lens: A Study of Indian Literary Adaptations on Screen examines the vibrant connection between Indian literature and film, highlighting the transformation of written stories when they are adapted for the screen. This research rigorously explores the aesthetic, cultural, and ideological interactions present in transforming literary works into films in different Indian languages. The study examines essential adaptations—from classic literature and recent novels to present-day short stories—demonstrating how filmmakers interpret, re-contextualize, or even challenge original literary pieces to align with cinematic dialogue, audience anticipations, and socio-political environments. The research tackles important issues related to character development, narrative organization, integrity, and the visual representation of literary concepts. It also explores caste, gender, nationalism, and regional identity as they relate to adaptability. This book places Indian film adaptations in the context of both national cinematic traditions and the global conversation on media convergence, drawing on ideas of intersexuality and adaptation studies. Last but not least, The Lines and the Lens provides insights into the changing discourse between text and screen as well as the function of adaptation in Indian cultural production as an act of creativity and interpretation.
