Konceptualizacija glazbe kroz metaforu

Music is often considered a universal language which is capable of expressing ideas and emotions across all cultures, nations and ages that words cannot fully capture. Unlike other forms of art, such as literature or painting, music exists only in the moment of perception. Upon describing, listeners tend to describe music in various ways, using a wide range of terms that are either connected to music or not. This thesis will explore how listeners describe and interpret non-melodic, homophonic musical structures, i.e. triads and seventh chords, through language. Employing both music theory and cognitive linguistics, the study aims to investigate the role of metaphor, metonymy, and other conceptual devices in shaping the perception of chords. The main focus is on the differences in interpretation between musicians and non-musicians, all of whom are graduate students of English language whose native language is Croatian. By doing so, the thesis seeks to look into how musical phenomena are made comprehensible through language, as well as provide additional insight into the intersection of music and language.
