Technological Options for Salinity Removal Advances, Challenges, and Future Directions

This research paper is all inclusive of the technological options available in removal of salinity with a focus on the recent advances, challenges and the way forward in future research. Various traditional thermal desalination processes are assessed including but not limited to multi-stage flash (MSF) distillation, multi-effect distillation (MED), and vapor compression (VC) and membrane-based process such as reverse osmosis (RO), electro dialysis (ED), and membrane distillation (MD). As well, developing mixed production and electrochemical techniques with the combination of renewable energy systems are discussed. The evidence shows that leading technological innovations are associated with better membrane materials and energy recovery measures that can make processes efficient and sustainable. Development challenges like membrane fouling, brine disposal and cost-effectiveness still form some of the major concerns especially in economically strained areas. The research also emphasizes the relevancy to combine the smart monitoring and control system and to follow the stimulating policies to endorse the fair access and environmental safety. The review offers useful information to the research, engineering and policy making community who may seek to improve water security by facilitating the application of sustainable and economical salinity removal technology. The findings of the work have implications in curbing the issue of global freshwater shortage, climate change and growing demand.
