Employment Opportunities and Lifestyle Transformation Among Rural Women: A Case Study Of Gaya District, Bihar
Abstract Rural women in Gaya district, Bihar, are experiencing slow but visible changes in employment and everyday life. This study examines how work opportunities, especially through government programmes, self-help groups (SHGs), and rural wage schemes, are reshaping women's income, social status, decision-making at home, and everyday mobility. Using local data, government records, and previous studies, the paper explores both economic and non-economic transformations: increased cash income, access to savings and credit through SHGs, changes in time use, and evolving gender roles within families and communities. The study also notes continuing barriers such as insecure work, low wages in informal jobs, social constraints on women’s mobility, limited skill training, and gaps in access to formal markets and services. Findings show that programmes like JEEViKA (the Bihar rural livelihoods initiative) and participation in MGNREGA have helped many women gain livelihood access and confidence; yet, the depth of transformation varies across caste, education level, and village connectivity. Policy measures that strengthen market linkages for women’s microenterprises, expand skill training tailored for rural women, ensure gender-sensitive implementation of wage programmes, and provide childcare / social support can accelerate positive change. The paper argues for combined interventions, social, economic, and infrastructural, to convert short-term income gains into long-term lifestyle improvements and genuine empowerment for rural women in Gaya.
