Augustine's Theology of the Christian Life in The Sermon on the Mount
This study explores Augustine's De sermone Domini in monte as a theological exposition that presents a "perfect pattern of the Christian life." Written early in Augustine's ministry, the work interprets Jesus' teaching through a canonical and theological lens, highlighting four major themes: the perfection of the Law, a realized eschatology of joy, the necessity of inner righteousness, and a Scripture-wide perspective on spiritual formation. Augustine's allegorical exegesis is balanced by his pastoral concern to shape Christian piety. Despite interpretive weaknesses, his exposition demonstrates how early Christian theology integrated biblical interpretation, spiritual formation, and ecclesial teaching.
