Residual Waste Management Strategies in Water Treatment Plants Challenges and Solutions

Managing residuals in water treatment complexes is one of the serious issues and one with far reaching social implications such as environmental health and sustainability of resources. The paper entails a thorough report on the various residues wastes, its origin and the effects of water treatment wastes. It looks at technical, regulatory, economic and social impediments to successful waste management and identifies various strategies in the current physical, chemical, and biological treatments as well as resource recovery and sustainable disposal approaches. The presentation of case studies globally identifies the best practices and area innovations that illustrate the presenters and regionally adaptable and integrated solutions. Advances in technologies and monitoring systems provide a potential avenue of correcting the efficiency and greenness of operations that are amplified by requiring policy changes and the introduction of circular economies. The paper ends with the identification of research gaps that are crucial to fill and provide strategic recommendations to help fill the identified gaps in future investigation into residual waste monitoring and handling to eventually lead to resilient, health-protective, and environmentally sound water treatment systems.
