Cladding-Pumped Multicore Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier for Simultaneous C- and L-Band Amplification

In previous studies on cladding-pumped multi-core erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (MC-EDFA), all cores were designed with the same parameters. In this study, a cladding-pumped two-core EDFA with cores for the C-band and L-band is investigated using simulation, and the results of a design parameter optimization and the limitations of the amplification operating range are clarified. The design parameters of the EDFA are the normalized frequency, the relative refractive index difference, the erbium ion concentration in the core, the length of the erbium-doped fiber (EDF), and the pump power. The simulation results indicate that simultaneous amplification in the C-band and L-band can be achieved primarily by adjusting the erbium ion concentration in the L-band core. Furthermore, The operating range that allows simultaneous amplification in both the C-band and L-band is limited to conditions with high input signal power and high gain.
