Arsenic Removal Technologies in Bangladesh Current Practices, Emerging Innovations, and Future Di
In Bangladesh, where the entire water supply is contaminated with arsenic in the groundwater, an enormous epidemic exists, where millions of people are under sublethal doses of arsenic through their drinking water, mainly taken as tube wells. This research paper summarizes the present situation of arsenic removal technologies in Bangladesh including household and community level control, chemical, and physical treatment, and the developing technology like biochar-based filters and advanced adsorption media. A comprehensive analysis of the technologies shows their efficiencies in removing toxic substances, their economic viabilities, sustainability and their maintenance and compliance with the users. The research will combine both policy analysis and the community engagement strategy with a focus on the interaction between technological solutions and the socio-economic reality to have adequate mitigation of arsenic. Future directions identify a need to scale adaptable low-cost solutions and to supplement the removal of arsenic with water quality management on a broader scale, fill critical data gaps through further development of hydrogeological mapping, and the reinforcement of policy frameworks and capacity building. Such multidisciplinary perspective would enable the sustainable provision of arsenic-free drinking water and eventually the reduction of health hazards of chronic arsenic poisoning in Bangladesh.
