COMPARATIVE LINGUISTICS AND MODERN THEORIES OF LANGUAGE EVOLUTION
Comparative linguistics, the study of similarities and differences between languages to uncover their historical connections, has been a central pillar of linguistic science since the 19th century. By reconstructing proto-languages and identifying genetic relationships, comparative linguists have shed light on how languages diverge, converge, and influence one another. However, modern linguistic research increasingly intersects with broader theories of language evolution, which attempt to explain not only how languages change but also why they exist in their current forms.
