The Role of Brand Identity in Driving Consumer Trust and Purchase Decisions on E-commerce Platforms

Abstract This conceptual paper investigates the importance of brand identity in developing consumer trust and determining purchase intentions within e-commerce platforms, especially in the fiercely competitive environment and digital marketplace such as Amazon or eBay, which exposes users to a wide range of different brands with differential degrees of familiarity and trustworthiness. As informed by ubiquitous communication theories—branding theories in particular (Aaker’s Brand Equity Model and Keller’s Brand Knowledge, this study proposes a conceptual examination of how various brand identity components (name, logo, visual design, message) function as proximal antecedents that play a crucial role in building trust and reducing the perceived risk among online shopper to increase their purchase intention and purchase behavior toward a particular brand. Visually oriented brand elements: logos and design consistency across multiple touch points (e.g., product page form, advert, landing page) create consistent brand identity that underpins trust by improving familiarity and serving as cues of reliability and quality (Ozsomer et al. It also highlights the ways brand storytelling and a defined brand mission can create emotional engagement with consumers to generate brand loyalty and repeat purchase behaviour. Moreover, the research seeks to investigate the functions played by trust instruments like customer reviews, product ratings and social proof in extending brand identity, thereby, supporting consumer confidence about their purchase decisions. Theoretically, the article suggests that trust functions as a mediator between brand identity and purchase decisions, and that strong and 'real' brand identities lead to favorable consumer perceptions and purchase intentions. This study adds to the general knowledge of consumer psychology in the context of e-commerce, presenting brand identity as not only a marketing tool but also a determining factor of sustainable business success in the digital commerce world. Lastly, it provides actionable guidance to e-commerce operators to fine-tune their brand identity so that it is capable of satisfying the dynamic requirements of the digital consumers of today. This article ends up with some recommendations for more empirical research in order to further test the proposed framework and to study the brand identity and trust dynamics in different e-commerce platforms and product categories.
