Artifacts for Operationalizing the Degree of Knowledge Gain (DKG) Metric

This repository contains the technological artifacts developed to operationalize the Degree of Knowledge Gain (DKG) metric in real search environments. The package includes the source code for both a prototype search engine and a browser plug-in that enable real-time computation of DKG values from user interactions, such as queries and clicks. The artifacts are organized into two main components: project_dkg_v1: prototype search engine embedding the DKG metric directly into its retrieval logic. project_dkg_v2: browser plug-in designed to compute the DKG metric in real time while users interact with their preferred search engines. Both artifacts are implemented using Java, Spring Boot, Node.js, Express.js, MySQL, and JavaScript, and include API documentation to facilitate local execution and testing. Together, they provide the infrastructure to capture, process, and store interaction logs, supporting experimental research on search behavior and learning outcomes. The repository is released under the MIT License to ensure open access, reproducibility, and extensibility.
