Educational Mobile-Based Application for the Visually Impaired

This paper presents the design and development of a low-cost assistive mobile application for visually impaired and blind users. The study analyzed existing systems and voice recognition algorithms to identify strengths and weaknesses, then implemented a solution using current technologies, including the Google Computer Vision API. The Android-based application allows users to interact via voice commands, recognizes and analyzes text from printed documents, and provides responses in speech format. This enables visually impaired learners to access educational materials beyond Braille or audiocassette formats, improving learning efficiency and independence. Testing with both visually impaired and sighted users validated the system’s usefulness. The research demonstrates how computer science, voice recognition, and image recognition can be integrated to create affordable, AI-driven tools that expand access to education for visually impaired communities.
