Commemorative Coin Set to Celebrate the Relationship between The Thai Royal Family and The British Royal Family (พ.ศ. 2539 / ค.ศ. 1996)
This article presents the Thai–UK Commemorative Coin Set of 1996 (B.E. 2539), jointly issued by the Treasury Department of Thailand and the Royal Mint of the United Kingdom to honor and symbolize the royal friendship between King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX of Thailand) and Queen Elizabeth II during Her Majesty’s state visit to Thailand. The set consists of a 600-Baht Thai silver coin and a 5-Pound UK silver coin, produced in limited editions: 500 gold proof sets, 5,000 silver proof sets and 30,000 cupro-nickel sets. In addition, two individual commemorative coins were issued separately:• Thailand’s Golden Jubilee Coin marking the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne.• The United Kingdom’s 70th Birthday Commemorative Coin of Queen Elizabeth II featuring Windsor Castle and royal flags. These joint and individual issues highlight the historical and numismatic significance of both monarchs, who rank among the world’s longest-reigning sovereigns Queen Elizabeth II (2nd) and King Bhumibol Adulyadej (3rd). Together, they represent a lasting symbol of royal friendship and shared historical legacies between the two great monarchies.
