Understanding the types of stem cells and their characteristics
The most important common characteristics of cells called "stem cells" can be summarized into three main points.First, self-renewal capacity. This is the ability to divide indefinitely or over a long period of time to maintain stem cells with the same performance. This function plays a key role in maintaining tissue homeostasis and long-term regeneration.Second, differentiation capacity. This refers to the ability to differentiate into various cell types.Depending on the degree of cell potential, cells are classified as totipotent, pluripotent, or multipotent.Totipotency is the ability to form all cells and even the placenta, as in the case of a fertilized egg.Pluripotency means that, although it cannot form the placenta, it can differentiate into all cells in the body, like embryonic stem cells.Multipotency means that, like adult stem cells, it can only differentiate into a few cells of a specific lineage.Third, homing and niche interaction. These refer to the ability of stem cells to migrate to sites of damage or specific signals in the body and to interact with the surrounding microenvironment (niche) to regulate their function and establish themselves.Because of these three properties, stem cells play a very important role in tissue regeneration and anti-aging research.
