Evaluating Quantity Surveying Students’ Perception of Building Information Modelling (BIM): Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract: This study investigates how Quantity Surveying students view Building Information Modelling (BIM), a key innovation in construction. While BIM has the potential to significantly improve project management and efficiency, its adoption in QS education and practice faces various challenges and presents many opportunities. The primary objective is to comprehend the factors that influence QS students’ attitudes toward BIM, examining the challenges associated with incorporating BIM into their studies and the benefits it could bring to their education and future careers. The research uses surveys with QS students from different campuses to gather broad insights into their views on BIM. This approach helps to capture a detailed picture of their perceptions, experiences, and the value they see in BIM for their professional development. Results show that students are generally optimistic about BIM, recognizing its benefits for improving project outcomes. However, notable obstacles include a lack of BIM resources in academic institutions, limited practical BIM experience, and a curriculum gap that leaves students unprepared for BIM-centric workplaces. In short, the study highlights the need for educational institutions to update QS courses to reflect the technological advancements in the construction sector. Addressing these challenges can better equip future QS professionals to utilize BIM effectively, leading to more efficient and sustainable construction projects.
