Widows, especially in war-affected communities, face various psychological, social and economic problems. These problems create major challenges in their daily lives and social integration. In this context, the main objective of this study is to examine in detail the life challenges of widows. This study seeks to understand their psychological impacts, social exclusion and challenges in depth. The study was conducted using a sample of 15 widows selected randomly in a village in the northern part of Sri Lanka. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire consisting of 12 questions prepared by the researcher. The study was conducted using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The findings of the study showed that most of the widows, especially those in the age group of 36-45, were under severe psychological stress. They had symptoms such as depression, low self-esteem, guilt and low self-confidence. Those above 65 years of age reported that they were grieving for their husbands and were unable to make a decision. Socially, they were reluctant to participate in social events and felt ignored. Economic problems, especially among young widows, increased negative thoughts and feelings of insecurity. Health problems such as menstrual disorders were also observed. Some women were also found to be involved in prostitution as a result of social pressure. As a result, widowed women face severe psychological and social challenges. It is the duty of every segment of society to protect them and provide them with the necessary support, rights and facilities. They should not be isolated by society, but their health and safety should be prioritized and they should be reintegrated into society.
