Lagartos del desierto: adaptados a condiciones extremas pero amenazados por el ser humano

Among the species that inhabit the Chihuahuan Desert, lizards have developed remarkable morphological, physiological, and behavioral adaptations to survive under extreme arid conditions. The most striking species, such as the Texas Banded Gecko (Coleonyx brevis), Texas Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum), Long Nose Leopard lizard (Gambelia wislizenii), and Exile fringe-toed sand lizard (Uma exsul), are described in detail regarding their desert adaptations in aspects such as camouflage, defense, diet, and reproduction. Despite their evolutionary success, these species face multiple threats, including habitat fragmentation, recreational activities, climate change, and illegal trafficking. Some species are protected under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 and the IUCN Red List, although not all are sufficiently recognized or legally protected. It is of utmost importance to strengthen conservation measures, promote environmental education, and foster scientific research, with the goal of preserving these reptiles and the desert ecosystem to which they belong.
