Eastern Zodiac and Western Zodiac: Origins, Principles and Key Differences

This article examines and compares the fundamental differences between the “Eastern Zodiac” (Chinese–Thai) and the “Western Zodiac” (Greek–Roman), both of which have existed for more than two millennia yet developed on distinct temporal and cosmological foundations. The Eastern system operates on a twelve-year cycle, represented by twelve animals and closely linked to the lunar calendar, agrarian culture and ritual practices. In contrast, the Western zodiac is based on a twelve-month cycle, dividing the ecliptic into twelve equal segments aligned with constellations and the annual path of the sun. Key differences lie in units of time (year vs. month), underlying principles (lunar calendar vs. solar ecliptic), symbols (animals vs. constellations) and applications (Eastern rites, feng shui and annual fortune-telling vs. Western horoscopes and monthly astrology). By highlighting these contrasts, the article underscores how both systems embody unique intersections of astronomy, belief and cultural identity, while continuing to influence societies in the East and West today.
