GAME BASED APPROACH TO IMPROVING COLLABORATION IN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING
This research introduces Code Consensus, a game-based approach to enhancing collaboration in software engineering. The project addresses one of the persistent challenges in large-scale development: fostering cooperation among programmers who differ in coding styles, problem-solving strategies, and communication practices. Code Consensus is designed as a two-player, turn-based coding game in which participants collaboratively build a solution line by line. By constraining players to shared goals and integrating real-time feedback, the game encourages communication, consensus building, and mutual understanding of coding practices. Unlike traditional collaborative environments such as CoVSCode or pair programming, Code Consensus emphasizes strategic learning through gamification, motivating programmers to balance competition with cooperation. The system was implemented with detailed data specifications, structured database design, and experimental testing of usability and performance. Results indicate that incorporating game mechanics into programming education improves collaboration, reduces miscommunication, and enhances code maintainability. Beyond academic use, the approach has potential for professional training, where effective teamwork and high-quality code are crucial for project success. It also demonstrates that playful learning can be applied to serious engineering tasks without reducing technical rigor. The research highlights the broader implications of gamification in computer science education and professional environments. By combining playful interaction with real-world programming challenges, Code Consensus provides a unique learning experience that strengthens technical skills, communication, and problem-solving. The findings suggest that game-based learning can enrich the educational process, support the development of soft skills, and prepare future software engineers to perform more effectively in diverse, distributed teams, as well as in industry-scale projects.
