An Application of Tally ERP Software for Small Business in India: Challenges and Opportunities
Abstract This study examines the application of Tally ERP software in small businesses across India, with a focus on its challenges and opportunities. As one of the most widely used accounting solutions in the Indian market, Tally ERP provides comprehensive tools for financial accounting, inventory, taxation, payroll, and business management. The paper highlights the growing importance of Tally ERP for small enterprises in addressing issues of financial management, compliance with GST and taxation standards, and operational efficiency. Findings reveal that while the software enables accurate record-keeping, decision-making, and compliance, small businesses often face barriers such as lack of training, user resistance, technical complexity, and financial constraints. Case studies from the retail and manufacturing sectors demonstrate both the potential benefits and limitations of adoption. A comparative analysis with other accounting packages, including QuickBooks and Zoho Books, underscores Tally’s strong alignment with Indian business practices despite challenges in scalability and customization. The study concludes that effective implementation, user training, and continuous adaptation are essential to fully realize the benefits of Tally ERP, making it a valuable yet underutilized resource for India’s small business sector.
