Еxperimental investigation of an RC bridge beam strengthened witg high-performance concrete

There are numerous factors which can adversely affect bridges’ overall condition, serviceability and even endanger their safety. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the structural members of bridges in order to ensure their normal functioning and thus to prolong their service life. However, conventional strengthening methods used for reinforced concrete structures often prove to be ineffective considering the specific features of bridges and the environment in which they operate. Hence, a new, more suitable approach is needed. The purpose of this paper is to present high-performance concrete (HPC) as a contemporary material for strengthening RC bridge beams. A scaled beam model is subjected to an experimental investigation. First, the beam is tested under static loading. Then, the model is strengthened using a two-sided HPC jacket and the strengthened beam is tested again under the same loading. Next, the model is subjected to cyclic loading. Finally, the beam is tested again under static loading until its complete failure. Based on the results, a comparison of the beam performance before and after strengthening as well as after cyclic loading is made. Furthermore, conclusions regarding the effectiveness of HPC strengthening are drawn and some recommendations for the use of the method are provided.
