Mary of Bethany and Mary Magdalene Restoring the Truth through Scripture, Scholarship, and Spirit
Abstract Mary of Bethany and Mary Magdalene: Restoring the Truth through Scripture, Scholarship, and Spirit For centuries, Christian tradition has fragmented and diminished the figure of Mary Magdalene, conflating her with the unnamed "sinful woman" of Luke 7 and severing her from Mary of Bethany. This distortion, crystallized in Pope Gregory the Great's 591 CE homily, recast Mary as a penitent prostitute rather than as a faithful disciple, healer, and witness to the resurrection. This paper re-examines the biblical evidence for the identification of Mary Magdalene and Mary of Bethany as one woman. By analyzing the four gospel accounts of the anointing of Jesus, it argues that the woman who prepared Christ for burial in Bethany is the same woman who stood at the cross and was first to the tomb. The study then considers the historical consequences of her misrepresentation, which effectively silenced women's leadership within the Church. Finally, it explores contemporary manifestations of Spirit that affirm this restoration of Mary's identity, including synchronicities, revelations, and lived experiences of divine confirmation. The paper contends that restoring Mary to her rightful place is not only a matter of historical accuracy but also of theological urgency. To recognize her as disciple and herald is to recover a fuller gospel and to heed the ongoing witness of Spirit in the present.
