The Effectiveness of Bilingual Education Programs: A Meta-Analysis of Academic Outcomes
Abstract This meta-analysis synthesizes empirical findings comparing the academic outcomes of students in bilingual education programs with those of their monolingual peers. Using rigorous statistical methods and a comprehensive search strategy, this study evaluates the effectiveness of bilingual education across different program models, student demographics, and educational contexts. Academic outcomes analyzed include proficiency in the first and second languages, performance in core subjects (e.g., mathematics, science, and literacy), and cognitive development. Results indicate significant advantages in language proficiency and cognitive flexibility among bilingual students, with moderate to large effect sizes depending on program quality and implementation fidelity. These findings provide valuable insights for educational policy and instructional design in linguistically diverse contexts such as India.
