Time-Domain vs Frequency-Domain Approaches in Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)

Time-domain (TD) and frequency-domain (FD) techniques are both fundamental in EMC design, diagnostics, and compliance. FD methods align with CISPR/IEC receiver masks , whereas TD methods capture impulsive and sequence-dependent phenomena such as ESD, EFT, and surge that often drive field failures. This paper (i) states a prescriptive workflow for selecting and translating between TD and FD; (ii) validates the key equations used in translation and accuracy estimation (ENBW↔RBW, detector behavior, jitter-limited SNR, crest factor, leakage/scalloping) with references to established EMC texts ; (iii) defines a validation protocol with measurable acceptance criteria; and (iv) demonstrates the method with two quantitative case studies where TD and FD can diverge and how to reconcile them .
