Kinetics of chlorogenic acid extraction from Elsholtzia ciliata leaves
This study examines the kinetic modeling of the extraction process of chlorogenic acid components from Elsholtzia ciliata leaves. We investigated the influence of extraction temperature, ethanol solvent concentration, pH, and solvent-to-material ratio on the extraction of chlorogenic acid compounds across various time intervals, utilizing a pre-treatment method where the raw material was blanched at 80°C for 90 seconds and then rapidly cooled. The highest concentration reached was 5.0 ± 0.5 mg chlorogenic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry basis (db) under the conditions of pH 3.5, a solvent-to-material ratio of 6:1, and 60% ethanol (v/v) at 70 °C. The kinetics of the solvent extraction process for chlorogenic acid were evaluated utilizing five kinetic models: Fick's law, Modified Fick's law, Weibull distribution, Power law, and Elvovich equation. The results were consistent across all extraction circumstances, and the models had negligible error with RMSE values ranging from 0.0075 to 0.0115. Among the models studied, the Elovich equation and the Power law were the most appropriate for the extraction process. • CGA extraction kinetics from Elsholtzia ciliata leaves were analyzed with five models. • The highest CGA yield was achieved at pH 3.5, solvent-to-material ratio 6:1, 60% ethanol, 70°C. • Statistical analysis confirmed process parameters' significance in kinetic model coefficients. • The findings aid in optimizing industrial CGA extraction for functional foods and pharma.
