A Novel Wideband Magnetic Probe With Dual-Component Detection Capability: Design and Experimental Characterization

This letter presents a novel magnetic probe featuring a broad bandwidth and dual-component detection capability. Diverging from conventional orthogonal-loop architectures, the proposed design implements a hybrid-loop configuration to achieve simultaneous discrimination of dual magnetic field components along the horizontal and vertical directions. The hybrid-loop configuration includes a pair of symmetrical shorted loops and an interconnected line. First, the symmetrical shorted loops are utilized to measure a horizontal magnetic field component and enhance the detection sensitivity by expanding the reception area. Second, in order to measure a vertical magnetic field component, a horizontal interconnected line is used to connect the symmetrical shorted loops. The outer grounded planes adjacent to these detection loops are fully metalized to prevent unwanted magnetic field coupling. Then, for the purpose of demonstrating the design rationality, the proposed magnetic probe is simulated by high-frequency electromagnetic software, manufactured on a four-layer stacking structure, and characterized by the near-field scanning system with two different calibration kits (50-<inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\Omega $</tex-math> </inline-formula> microstrip line and slot line). The experimental validation confirms the proposed probe’s discrimination capability of the dual magnetic field components and wide operational bandwidth of 4–15 GHz.
