Integrating Yoga into Physical Education: Enhancing Fitness, Mental Well-Being, and Student Engagement in Schools

Abstract This empirical study explores the integration of yoga into physical education (PE) programs and its impact on fitness, mental well-being, and student engagement in schools, aiming to assess whether incorporating yoga into traditional PE curricula can enhance overall student health outcomes and foster greater participation in physical activity; the study employed a mixed-methods design, combining quantitative measures of fitness outcomes, including flexibility, strength, and aerobic capacity, with qualitative surveys and interviews to explore students' psychological well-being, attitudes toward physical activity, and engagement in PE classes, with the intervention involving a 12-week yoga program integrated into PE classes for middle and high school students, alongside a control group continuing with traditional PE activities, where results indicated significant improvements in flexibility and strength in the experimental group, as well as reductions in reported stress levels and anxiety, with students expressing increased satisfaction and motivation to participate in physical activity, suggesting that yoga not only supports physical fitness but also promotes emotional resilience and mental clarity, enhancing students' overall well-being; the study further revealed that yoga-based PE programs contributed to improved student engagement, with 78% of participants in the experimental group reporting that yoga made PE more enjoyable and accessible, compared to 56% in the control group, highlighting yoga’s potential to create an inclusive environment for all students, including those with varying skill levels and physical capabilities, emphasizing the significance of incorporating yoga as a regular component of PE curricula to foster holistic health development in students; these findings suggest that integrating yoga into PE can have lasting benefits for both physical and mental health, supporting the need for schools to adopt yoga-based PE programs as part of their broader wellness initiatives to promote lifelong healthy habits and enhance student engagement in physical education classes, ultimately contributing to improved academic performance and overall quality of life.
