Analysis of Research Trends Related to Artificial Intelligence in Dental and Dental Hygiene Education
Background: With the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), dental and dental hygiene education is increasingly incorporating AI to foster future-ready professionals. However, integrated analyses of the key thematic areas of existing AI-related educational research in this field are lacking. The aim of this study is to identify research trends in dental and dental hygiene education using a network analysis of AI-related literature. Methods: We searched PubMed for articles published between 2019 and 2024 using terms such as AI, dental education, and dental hygiene education. Overall, 76 articles were included after applying the selection criteria. Key terms were extracted from abstracts and refined through synonymous grouping. We conducted social network analysis to classify the terms into conceptual clusters based on frequency and co-occurrence, using Net-Miner 4.0 (Cyram Inc., Seongnam, Korea). Results: Four key conceptual clusters were identified as follows: 1) AI-based diagnostic imaging education and utilization, 2) Group digital dentistry and non-face-to-face environments, 3) Group treatment innovation and integrated education using AI diagnostic technology, and 4) Implant groups and orthodontic treatments. Research has expanded from a technical focus to include pedagogical and ethical aspects, with increasing attention being paid to undergraduate and continuing-education programs. Conclusion: The findings revealed a multidisciplinary shift in AI-related dental education research, highlighting the growing need to integrate AI literacy, ethics, and practical training into curricula. Educational strategies should focus on enhancing student competence and instructor preparedness to bridge technological innovation with clinical relevance.
