The Experience and Meaning of Ashtanga Yoga Practice for Individuals in Contemporary Society
This study aimed to explore the healing experiences, bodily awareness, and flow states experienced by individuals practicing Ashtanga Yoga. The participants were individuals experiencing physical and emotional exhaustion. A qualitative case study was conducted over 15 weeks, using in-depth interviews, participant observation, and related documents for data collection. Findings revealed that participants were initially drawn to Ashtanga Yoga by a desire for new physical activities, recommendations from experienced instructors, and the pursuit of aesthetic ideals. Early training involved physical and mental discomfort due to unfamiliarity. Over time, participants developed heightened bodily awareness and experienced immersive flow states through synchronized breath and movement. Eventually, Ashtanga Yoga was perceived as a process of healing―providing mental rest, emotional release, and a sense of inner purification. The study concludes that regular practice of Ashtanga Yoga can support holistic healing through enhanced self-awareness and embodied flow.
