Dolly is Pangasius: What Consumers Need to Know

This article aims to provide a clear understanding of “Dolly fish,” which is in fact Pangasius hypophthalmus, a freshwater farmed catfish commonly marketed under the names Dolly, Dory, or Basa. This marketing practice has led to consumer confusion with “John Dory” (Zeus faber), a deep-sea marine fish of much higher value. The article discusses differences in species, habitats, farming systems, and nutritional values. Findings indicate that Pangasius offers affordability, tender and fatty flesh, and fewer bones, making it suitable for general consumption. However, it contains lower levels of protein and omega-3 fatty acids compared to marine fish. In contrast, John Dory provides higher protein, lower fat, and significantly more omega-3, resulting in superior nutritional quality. This comparison highlights the importance of accurate food communication, enabling consumers to make informed choices based on both nutritional value and price.
