The ECOvette: Unveiling Plant Dynamics Through Direct Leaf Emission Analysis
We developed the ECOvette, a lightweight and easily attachable leaf-wearable cuvette designed for extended outdoor use. This tool addresses the challenge of accurately measuring biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in natural ecosystems, where their dynamic nature and low concentrations make continuous monitoring difficult. Connecting the ECOvette with a proton-transfer time-of-flight mass spectrometer, we enable real-time, quantitative flux measurements of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and VOCs under various environmental conditions. These data provide critical insights into plant responses to stress stimuli, capturing rapid VOC emission dynamics while minimizing interference with natural leaf processes. The ECOvette merges the advantages of leaf-wearable sensors with high-precision analytical techniques, supporting large-scale deployment in sensor networks for ecosystem monitoring. Its noninvasive design allows for prolonged attachment without altering leaf physiology, while integrated sensors record ambient air and leaf temperature, offering additional environmental context. By facilitating long-term, real-time monitoring of gas exchange and plant–environment interactions, the ECOvette advances research on plant stress responses and ecosystem dynamics, making it a valuable tool for studying the effects of climate variability on vegetation.
