Cybersecurity Audits in Financial Institutions: Evaluating Audit Approaches in Digital Banking

Digital banking has become a critical service in today’s financial ecosystem, enhancing convenience for users, while simultaneously increasing exposure to cybersecurity threats. This study explored the role of cybersecurity audits as a vital tool for assessing, managing, and strengthening digital security in financial institutions. Cybersecurity audits serve as a mechanism for detecting vulnerabilities, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and fostering customer trust by demonstrating commitment to data protection. This study provides an in-depth analysis of different auditing methods, including internal, external, and hybrid approaches, and examines their respective advantages and limitations. This highlights the significance of regular and comprehensive audits in mitigating the risks posed by evolving threats and human errors. Through qualitative research based on secondary data, including regulatory frameworks and case studies from global banking institutions, this paper illustrates how various types of audits are implemented and their impact on security posture. Case studies demonstrate that targeted audits have led to measurable improvements in operational security. Furthermore, the research emphasizes the importance of affordable, scalable tools for smaller banks to effectively adopt cybersecurity practices. This paper concludes with recommendations for frequent hybrid audits, staff training, and adherence to international cybersecurity standards. It also identifies future trends, such as the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the auditing processes. These innovations promise to enhance threat-detection capabilities and support proactive security management across the financial sector.
