Women's Visibility and Inclusivity in African Governance: A Critical Review of Leadership, Social Justice, and Democratic Development

This article explores the evolving visibility of women in African governance, with a particular focus on Nigeria. It examines how cultural, structural, and political barriers have historically marginalized women, while highlighting the transformative impact of deliberate leadership, advocacy, and global reforms. Special attention is given to the contributions of General Ibrahim Babangida through the “Better Life for Rural Women” initiative spearheaded by his late wife and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration has advanced women’s inclusion in political leadership. Using comparative insights from Liberia, Ghana, and international contexts such as Saudi Arabia’s recent reforms, the article situates women’s political participation within broader debates on inclusivity, social justice, and democratic development. It argues that targeted policies, visionary leadership, education, and the amplifying role of social media are reshaping Africa’s political space, gradually breaking systemic barriers and enhancing women’s visibility in governance.
