Hierarchical Plasma-Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition (H-PELAD) for Tunable Nanostructured Diamond-Like Carbon Coatings with Gradient Wettability

**Abstract:** This paper introduces a novel approach, Hierarchical Plasma-Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition (H-PELAD), to synthesize diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings with tunable nanostructure and gradient wettability. By dynamically controlling plasma parameters and precursor flow rates across a multi-zoned reaction chamber, we achieve unprecedented control over the coating's hierarchical architecture, ranging from grain size and density to surface functionalization with tailored functional groups. This method enables the fabrication of DLC coatings with precisely engineered wettability profiles, moving beyond traditional hydrophobic or hydrophilic surfaces towards controlled anisotropic wetting behavior, offering significant advantages in biomedical implants, microfluidic devices, and anti-icing applications. The technique possesses immediate commercial viability utilizing existing ALD infrastructure, requiring only modest hardware modifications and software control enhancements.
