First case of breeding of the Smew (Mergellus albellus) in Ukraine in 21st century. - I.V. Zubkovych, V.V. Zubkovych, O.V. Dobrynskyi. - Berkut. 34 (1). 2025. - Up to the middle of the 20th century, the Smew nested in the floodplains of the lower Dnipro river, but the creation of the Kakhovka reservoir destroyed suitable habitats for nesting. Until recently, it had the status of a migratory and wintering species in Ukraine. On 28.05.2025, a nest with 6 eggs was found in a nesting box for the Goldeneye on Nobel lake (51.86 N, 25.77 E) in the Nobel National Park (north-west part of Rivne region). Unfortunately, breeding was unsuccessful. The nearest nesting site is located 138 km away at the Beloe fish farm in the Gomel region of Belarus. [Ukrainian].
